Earth Hour

This Saturday sees the 10th Earth Hour take place across the world! This annual event is aimed at raising awareness about the urgency of climate change and the simple fact that, by conserving energy, we can all play a role in securing a safe future for our planet!

What’s It All About?

In 2007, Sydney took part in a mass switch off – the event saw 65,000 households and 2,000 business and landmarks (including the Opera House and Harbour Bridge), turn off their lights for one hour. It has since grown to inspire Earth Hour, a global campaign which takes place in 172 countries! Organisers are describing it as the world’s largest grass roots movement for the environment and more than 620,000 people across the world took part last year! Over the years Earth Hour has been celebrated in many new and innovative ways… from a human powered dance floor in London, to famous landmarks in Paris and New York falling dark - the International Space Station has even taken part!

What’s The Impact?

The aims of Earth Hour go way beyond saving energy – organisers want each and every one of us question the decisions we make in our day to day lives. For climate change to truly be tackled we need a wide range of approaches; from global agreements between countries, to innovative businesses creating solutions and actions we can all take.

Be it taking a shower instead of a bath, only boiling a kettle with the water you need for your tea or taking the train rather than the car, there are lots of ways we can all help to protect the future of our planet, and that is what Earth Hour is all about!
